How much cleaning up would you expect to do?

Luke unexpectedly vomitted tonight at a cafe at a local shopping mall - a large amount on the chair cushions (fabric) maybe 20cm by 15cm? Fortunately we had just finished eating.

I called the waitress over and said ""My son has just vomitted, do you have any cleaning spray or paper towels or gloves please?"She got the paper towel and spray and then walked away. I cleaned it up as best as I could (it was just me and Luke but he was OK), and then she came over and said "it is leaving a stain, I will see what else I can find" and came back with another spray and handed it to me. I said "what do you do when this unusally happens?"and she said "we haven't had this happen before"which I reckon was a lie (unless it was her first day working).

I used the second spray and then she came back and said "it hasn't all come off has it? That doesn't look very good for customers. We will have to get it dry cleaned" My husband came back at this stage and said "lets go, we have done all we can, we need to get him home for bed."

Would you have offered to pay for the dry cleaning? She seemed to be strongly hinting that it was my responsibility to make it clean again. But surely they have drinks, food etc spilt on their cushions all the time?

Thanks for the laugh Renee! It wasn't the food, when we came home he was OK but had a temp, so most likely a virus.

It's funny I work in a hospital and if a patient vomits/wees etc the staff ALWAY clean it up, so we know it is done to infection control standards. I would never dream of giving a relative/visitor the cleaning stuff and walking away.

But she was only a young waitress, maybe 19 or 20.....

I reckon if she was young and she probably wasn't trained to deal with it properly. It's the staff responsibility to clean it up. It's just part and parcel of the job description as a waitperson and she should have toughened up and cleaned it or at least helped you to clean it. It's the same as if someone spilled food or drink. And no you shouldn't have to pay for drycleaning its part of the restaurants expenses for wear and tear.

If it were in a food court it would be a bit different, I would say its the parent responsibility but in a restaurant they should take it under control. It's not like you deliberately vandalised their furniture!

The last time I asked for something to clean up, I was told OH&S or one of them regulations meant that they legally couldn't give me any chemicals, cloths, etc. I used a few napkins to clean up, but they pretty much told me I wasn't allowed to clean up.

dd1 accidentally wet herself in a food court once, and the cleaner was lovely, she came over as i was trying to mop it up (thankfully the chairs were all those hard wood ones) and she was like, dont worry about it, leave it and just sort her out, it happens all the time, dnt worry its ok' and she mopped it up for us. i was really thankful. dd2 recently wet herself in kmart at the layby counter and they just went and got a mop and mopped it up as well. i havent had the spew thing, or maybe i have, but not on fabric only on the floor and its ben minimal so i;ve used paper towels or baby wipes and cleaned it up. i dont think the waitress should have worried too much. if it was me i would take the chair outside, give it a good hose and sponge and i bet it would come off anyway

Honestly, none. None of the cleaning should be done because of OH&S.

And i also think its very rude for the waitress to have you clean it up the way she did. I personally think its just one of those things, its going to happen and your son is not the first to do it. If you put mud all over the floor of their restaurant who cleans it then? - i think its their responsibility. JMO.

Evelyn's done it once, and I used some napkins to mop it up a bit, but ultimately, it's not my job to maintain the cleanliness of the venue, IYKWIM. I did alert the staff to it so they knew that there was a need for a clean-up.

I managed a cafe for many years and we had soooo many kids vomit there!! In all honesty, we never had any parent/carer just assume that we would clean it. And as a parent I would never ever expect someone else to clean up my childs vomit. Same as if the boys make a big mess of the floor/table with their food - I will always clean up what I can. Maybe thats because I've been on the receiving end of the mess though.
The parents we dealt with would always offer to clean it up. Most times they would have already mopped up what they can with napkins and then we would scrub it after. In terms of drycleaning - thats the responsibility of the cafe! We had these funky plastic chairs that could easily be wiped down as well - no fabric seats to worry about!!

Yeah i agree with you Tara if DD vomited i would never expect somebody else to clean it! I would do it myself unless they insisted on cleaning it for me.
We eat out in restruants alot and even if DD makes a mess i will clean it before i leave.

If i was working in a cafe or restruant i honestly dont think i could clean another childs voimt. Even when DD was a little baby and would do a milk spew i would freak out and call DH to help Blushing Blushing

I HATE vomit but if it was my child i would do it.

DD has thrown up a couple of times in restuarants. The first time it went everywhere, all the table, chairs (plastic), floor. DH went to get some cleaning stuff and one of the employees helped him clean it up while I cleaned and changed her in the toilets. The second time I managed to catch of it in an empty chip box which I disposed of and then cleaned the rest with nappy wipes.

I find it bad enough cleaning up my own kids vommit so I would never expect anyone to do it for me, but am very gratefull when they do.

I agree with them paying for the dry cleaning, they'd have drinks, food spilt on them anyway.

I had this problem recently but not at a restaurant at a playland. DS vomitted at a playland. The playland is in a sporting complex so had to go out to the reception and tell them that he had just vomitted at the top of the big slide. the young girl handed me a pretty dirty cloth and asked me if i was alright to clean it. I looked at her with a kind of look like "REALLY, You want me to do it with that" so i took the cloth had to climb to the top of the slide with DS who has only just started walking and clean it up with the dirty cloth all it did was wiped it everywhere. so i then went and got baby wipes and that did a little bit better of a job so i left it and decided to go. \

but really shouldnt the girl came and cleaned it with a proper anti bacterial cleaner or something. for all i know it was probably left that way. makes me cringe OhMyGod

Dot that is a big reason I don't go to those places Bored ew!

And that was a bit rude she didn't even offer to help... Mind u, at 19 I probably would have done the same thing lol.
I had a phobia of vomit and I was a teacher...sooo you can imagine what happened there!! At one school, it was the teacher's responsibility to clean it, but at my current school, the groundsman will do it! woo hehe

Dot- ewww! And Katie- it's a bit if a shared responsibility at my school. When I was pregnant, a student threw up in the centre of the classroom, right where all the kids sit on the floor. I gave it a bit of a clean, but I nearly threw up myself (pregnancy lowered my tolerance to a few things!) But the maintenance guy took over a week and some pestering to clean it. People just don't want to. Fair enough. Luke's mummy, no way should u pay drycleaning fees. U gave it a good attempt at cleaning, I think the snotty waitress should have done a bit, even if it is unpleasant. JMO

I'm gonna go against the grain here as I don't think it was her resposnsibility to clean it. She's paid to serve food, not clean up vomit. I'd never expect anyone else to clean up after my child, just my opinion.

Nope I wouldn't be paying for dry cleaning but I would ask them to give me some stuff so I could clean it up as best as I could at the time..keeping in mind it would be quick if I had my child standing there covered in vomit! Thank goodness this hasn't happened to me yet lol. When I was a kid I threw up quite a few times in public though, I used to get car sick all the time and often throw up once we got to the destination..gross I know.
