I'm very worried I'm going to wet myself. The last two ultrasounds I've had during last pregnancy I had to drink the litre then hold for an hour. Each time they were running late and by the time I got in there I was in sooo much pain and I nearly wet myself each time. Plus my bladder was too full each time and was told to empty 'a little'.. What a stupid thing to ask someone pregnant to do! Unsure

So do you follow instructions to the letter? Wee two hours before ultrasound, drink 1 litre in the next hour and then hang on for an hour until the time of the ultrasound, or whenever it actually is

Generally no.... With one of mine I drank the 1itre and just before leaving home vomited it all up and the scan still went fine. Since then I have only had a glass or two and made sure I was well hydrated beforehand as well and not had an issue.

I'm the same as Tarli. At the dating scan for this bub I could not hold the water down. My bladder was completely empty! But the sonographer said I was skinny plus my uterus and bladder were in a good position anyway so they still got a clear u/s.

I have been in that painful state waiting for u/s and its not nice! I just usually drink a glass of water about an hour before the appt time and that gives me a bit in my bladder but not painful.

Good luck!

Whenever I followed the instructions i spent the wait dying to pee (let alone when they push down with the u/s), then got told to empty it a little (I agree this is difficult!). I then began just have 1-2 glasses about half an hour before and never had any issues.
Worse case scenario if you don't have enough liquid, they have to go trans-vaginally. A bit uncomfortable but not that bad.

I was only ever told to drink 300ml with all of mine and it was fine - except I was busting by the time I had the scans.

I was just like you, worried to death! I had to go 40 minutes by car in between and just before we got to the hospital I went to the toilet. I was in tears, absolutely balling my eyes out because I was so scared they wouldn't see anything. Of course I found out later on that I was 21 weeks and it wasn't such a big deal LOL I think the office lady thought my DP done something to upset me because she was constantly giving him "death stares" LOL.

Don't worry too much hun, I've heard of plenty of people going in with empty bladders and it's been fine. Even if they can't see bub I'm sure they could do one trans-vaginally Smile

With my first pregnancy I drank the whole litre then was busting before the hr that your ment to drink it in so went to the toilet and drunk another litre. It was hell drinving to the ultrasound place with a full bladder, every bump I though I was going to wet my pants. My last pregnancy the doc said I only had to drink 500ml, much better for my poor bladder and I wasn't busting during the ultrasound.

1st pregnancy yes!!
And I felt the same had to pee it hurt alot and was told to empty my bladder in all of the ultra sounds... And they ran late!

A few months ago I need to have an ultra sound (not pregnancy related) I only drunk half the water, they made me sit around for 3 hours and then ended up doing an internal.

Today I finished my litre of water only about 30mins before my appointment and she said it was a good amount. Thats is what I plan on doing again!

My instructions say "one glass of water within one hour of appointment"

When i was preg with DD they told me that the puropse of having something in your bladder is so if baby is in a funny position doing a wee can make baby move to a diffrent position.

I had to drink a 750ml bottle of water before my U/S

I found out with my last ultrasounds that my bladder fills from the bottom instead of the top so that stuffs up my U/S a lot, it makes them too murky looking and I ended up needing an empty bladder anyway RollEyes

I had tons of ultrasounds this most recent pregnancy.

The 6 week dating, 12 week NT, a fetal echo, a 20 week morph, a second morph because the machine broke down half way through the first!!! I also had about 6-8 growth scans and placenta checks. Not once was I told to ever drink anything!! It actually said on my appointment letter not to drink any more then usual LOL.

This is so different to my first pregnancy when I rocked up to many of these SAME ultrasounds ready to pee my pants!!!

Nope, my first ever ultrasound I did the whole 1litre
Of water thing and they told me my bladder was full so after that I just drank enough to feel like I am well hydrated and perhaps that my bladder is full but not busting :)

Well i tried to drink the whole litre before each scan but I already had a small bladder before pregnancy and I really couldn't stand it so much pain so i just went to the toilet as I pleased but then I would just try and drink a bottle of water just before I went into my scan I never had any problems.

Make sure you are well hydrated normally, that way when you need to drink some water for your U/S it fills your bladder instead of trying to hydrate the rest of your body. Every womans body is different, I have a retroverted uterus so didnt have to drink as much to be able to get good views of my pregnancy. If this is your first ultrasound, I would follow the directions that you have been asked to do and then see what they say and ask for subsequent ultrasounds what you need to do (from the Sonographer)

We went for our nt scan on Friday. When I booked in they told me to pee 2 hours before and then drink 1l over the next hour. So when I went in, the first thing I said to the lady doing the scan was 'I'm really sorry I kept throwing up the water and there's not going to be anything in there!!' she just laughed and said there was no one rule that worked for everyone, just to stay hydrated. The scan went perfect with my empty bladder anyway! With my dating scan this time (approx 7 weeks) I was lucky to have kept down half a glass, but they could still see bub fine. In future, I think I'll drink a glass an hour before and leave it at that!

I've never been told to drink a ltr before an ultrasound.

Empty your bladder 2 hrs before and drink 600mls of water an hour before your appointment is usually what I get told. And usually that is only for the NT scan (I've never had a dating scan).

But I'm also one of those weird pregnant ladies that never really has to pee more then usually when pregnant so it's not really an issue for me.
