Hey just tried to ring centrelink but there is a a big wait apparently so thought I would try later and see if anyone on here could shed some light for me.
As some of u already know I have been having problems this pregnancy. I have been diagnosed with placenta previa and had a bleed on monday that kept me in hospital until Thursday. When I got discharged the doctor said if I bleed again they will be keeping me in hospital until baby is born. Now who knows when that will be it all depends if they decide to monitor me or just go ahead and do a c-section early.

Either way it means I won't be able to work and we will need extra days of child care for Jack as we would have no one to care for him on the days I don't work (monday and wednesday). Me not working is undoable for us..we live literary pay to pay and only just scrape though, I have no idea how we would even pay rent.
We r both so stressed and already fighting about what we r going to do.
Does anyone know if I would be able to claim something from centrelink?

Check out and see if you're eligible for the parenting payment. All the details are on their website and they base the amount you're entitled too on your and your DH's wages. You can receive this payment along with the FTB's and Baby Bonus. (I checked as this is the option I am going to use instead of the Paid Parental Leave).

Speak too the social worker at the hospital, have you got sick or annual leave from work?, can you arrange payment plans with some bills?
What where you going too do when you finished up working?
Could your dh get carers leave from work for the 2days a week or take sick leave annual leave?

I've been in the Medicare/Centrelink office in the town where my mum lives twice this week, and there have been hardly any people there. Let me know if you want a ride down there on Monday to talk about it with them.

once you know whats happening and your weekly pay is, ask to have your ccb rate reassessed to take effect immediately

Sorry to hear about your troubles Jodie. All the very best and I hope things improve for you and bubs stays in much longer.

I do have direct experience with this and basically there is nothing you can do!! PPP and any other payments take into account the prior 12 weeks income.The only thing you can do is ask for an advance on your FTB. They will do this for 1 payment only.

With DS2 I was the main income earner as DH was a student and worked at Bunnings 1 day a week!! I was put in hospital 4 weeks before he was born then he spent 5 weeks in hospital afterwards. As DH didn't accumulate leave being casual and my employer didn't pay mat leave, we were on a nil income for 9 weeks. We asked CL about the PPP (even Austudy... DH didn't get it even though he was a full time student because I worked but when I didn't we thought he would be eligible) but we were still rejected due to the 12 week thing.

This time round DS3 was in hospital for just short of 5 weeks and DH was on leave without pay after 3 because his holidays ran out. We had free accommodation this time (unlike when DS2 was in hospital) but were spending $24 a day on parking and $200 a week on petrol plus takeaway breakfast, lunch and dinner daily!! I asked Centrelink to rush through my baby bonus and it was noted as urgent in their system... but I am still waiting, DS is 7 weeks old. Care factor, ZERO!!

So anyway, like I said I do have experience with this and there is very little you can do. We have always had rainy day money on our mortgage and able to redraw so we were never without. I have no idea what others do that are not so fortunate.

Social workers at hospitals can be good but are very hesitant to assist with anything financial in my experience (parking vouchers etc) unless you have a health care card and are on full time benefits which they ask evidence of. They then want to know your life story etc... asking for a parking voucher (at our hospital it reduces it from $24 a day to $8) is like going for a job interview.

A friend of mine was a dance teacher and university student, and towards the end of her pregnancy, she was unable to physically teach her classes, and was no longer attending classes. She sort of fell into a gap there, but managed to go on the dole for the last month or so...

I wonder if there was something you could arrange with your studies that would get you onto Austudy? Or that might not take effect until the beginning of SP1 if you were to sign up for 2 classes then. Or ditching the uni idea all together and try to get some sort of documentation to prove you're physically unable to do your job, then go on the dole while you "job search" for something less physically demanding?

hey Jodie
My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in june last year, so she cant work due to treatment, she needed a dr cert for centrelink so she could go on sickness benefit, it was such a crappy stressful situation, centrelink are painfulMad in the end she only receives $406 a fortnight with her hubbys annual est which is not enough to survive.Bright side is its better than nothing at all, so im guessing you should get something if the DR has told you bedrest but you may need a letter ,hope this helpsCool
