not sure where to post this but hoping to get some answers, have tried googling but very unhelpful.. and scary.

at my 7 week ultrasound they found a 5cm corpus luteum cyst in one of my ovaries... well i was naughty and opened my films before going to the doctor for interpretation. is this common during pregancy? has this happened to anyone else? does this mean i released 2 eggs? and i should i worry? i can't get to a doctor until mid next week. Sad

I had a cyst on one of my ovaries as well which was picked up at my dating scan. It was about 7.5cm.
We required a few extra scans just to keep an eye on it but in the end, by our 19 week scan it was gone!

We were told that basically there is nothing they can do but it will be monitored for growth. They don't affect bubby at all but it can be very painful if they burst. And they burst spontaneously as your belly gets bigger.

Apparently it's really common in pregnancy because of the extra hormones and more often than not they will just disappear.
I don't think it's anything to worry about but your doctor can give you all the info when you see them.
I actually posted a similar thread when I found out I had one and I got heaps of replies from the ladies saying they had also had them so it does appear to be really common Smile

Good luck and I hope that helps Smile

I had one of those two, mine was even larger. Was nothing really to worry about and it was gone by my 12 weeks scan. I was never told there was a risk to it bursting even though it was an above average size. I did have some bleeding early on and i thought they had originally said that was what was causing it but later they said that wasn't it. ???
Hope you are feeling better about it :)

I think it was in private so you wouldn't be able to access it.

yep i had one too. It had gone by my 20wk scan. My Dr/OB said that usually the cyst occurs in the side where the egg was released from and they are very common.

"This type of functional cyst occurs after an egg has been released from a follicle. The follicle then becomes a secretory gland that is known as the corpus luteum. The ruptured follicle begins producing large quantities of estrogen and progesterone in preparation for conception. If a pregnancy doesn't occur, the corpus luteum usually breaks down and disappears. It may, however, fill with fluid or blood, causing the corpus luteum to expand into a cyst, and stay on the ovary. Usually, this cyst is on only one side, and does not produce any symptoms."

It can be very common in pregnant women - I wouldnt be worried about it.

I had a cyst on one of my ovaries before I fell pregnant with Craig. 2 months after I found out I went back to doctor to see if cyst was gone and it was. So it just went by itself. Hope all is good! Just keep on top of it though cos I knew someone who had a huge one and had to get rushed in for surgery as they can burst apparently.

I was googleing Corpus Luteum and came across this thread!

I can tell most people have said it is normal but I want a bit of reasuarnce for my self!!!

A few weeks ago when I went for my dating scan my doc printed of the results + blood test results etc. I didn't look at them and was going to throw them away and this is what my ultra sounds said:

- Right ovary mesured 4.0ml and left ovary measured 14.7ml. The left ovary contains a 19mm corpus lutem.

That sounds to big... Now I am a bit of a hypercondriact... But I have also have been getting randomly sharp pains in my left side...? All through the pregnancy, I didn't actually think it was anything to worry about but now I am worried...

The corpus luteum cyst is just the thing that pops to release the egg when you ovulate. If you fall pregnant that cycle, the cyst hangs around and is actually what releases the first lot of hormones that keep the pregnancy viable, before the placenta starts to grow and takes over that job. It's normal, and it happens whenever you ovulate. (The corpus luteum cyst bursting is what people feel when they feel their ovulation - not everyone feels it, but for those that do, that's what it is.)

Thanks again Beck!! You have been so helpful to me lately :)
So it also doesn't matter that my left ovary is bigger...?

Will they check have that on record and check it at my 12 week scan or will it be something that i have to request..?

They have a look at ovaries during your regular scans. Mind you, they couldn't find my left ovary during my pregnancy with Evelyn - and when she came out via cesarian, they found it was wedged up high because I had a tumour the size of a tennis ball in it! Blink So if they *don't* actually note both ovaries are normal looking, ask them to have a second look. But I'm guessing your lefty was bigger because that's where the corpus luteum was. That's supposed to be big... Smile
