Making the decision to have another baby AFTER twins...

:shock: Hmmmmm, this is a tough one.

I've always thought of '3' as being the magic number for me and keep changing my mind as the girls are so difficult at times. But I don't want that to deter me away from having a third (and hopfully not 3rd and 4th together). Also, I really want to experience what it would be like to just have one at a time.

DH is pretty much happy to go with whatever I decide but we havn't made any firm decisions as yet. I know I want 3 but when is the right time I guess is the question. I do want to go back to working too though, so I'm really conflicted. Maybe we should have a baby in a few years so I could work a bit, or maybe we should have one now so I can get back to work and stay there without having to take off maternity leave or quit again. Decisions, decisions!!

So has anyone else decided to go for another baby AFTER having twins and how did you make your decision?
Just Remember, When you have a bad day....its not forever. A new day is just around the corner.

good luck with whatever you choose. i agree with your sentiment, however, that you shouldn't decide to not have another based on skylah and isabella's ability to be handfuls. i'm sure it's a developmental phase and one they'll (hopefully) quickly pass.

the girls will be different in a year rel, hopefully more settled for your sanity :lol: Its not like you are having a baby tomorrow and they will be like this.

I don't have twins but I have a full house. My husband has an 8 yr DS, 6 yr DD. I have a 7 and 3 yr old DS. We decided to go ahead with #5 which will be our first together. I struggled with my decision and then realize I would regret not having one with my current hubby. I'm glad now that we decided to. :D

Maybe give it some more time to think on it. I did, and the decision came to me. I knew the nagging feeling of wanting another wasn't going away. :wink:

My girls are my last and I am not having anymore. 4 is enough for us. I think the decision is the same wether you have one or multiples. The girls will change in a year and you will always have good times and tough times no matter how old they are. Its the fun of being a parent. I made the decision after my first because I felt I was ready to have another. It took me a few years to decide to try for a 3rd as Reagan was a bit of a handfull and as it was it took me another 4 years because of secondary infertilty. You just have to think about what age gap you would like between them. You will know when you are ready and don't stress as to how hard it will be. After having all my kids I realise if you can handle the first years with twins you can handle anything.

my sil had twins then went on to have a third. though the boys were 41/2 when bub 3 was born she said it was good cause by that age the occupy themselves, helpout, start school so she could enjoy having just the 1 baby

Just thought i'd add that there is a HUGE difference in behaviour between two year olds and three year olds. Two's are a crazy amount of work. At three they really start to settle down and even follow instructions! (sometimes)
Baby is going to take 9 months to "bake" so that gives your girls a quite a while to settle down and mature.

Hi Rel

I think as the other ladies hav said, your reasons for and against are good ones. But i also think if you are questioning whether your ready or not, then thats your answer right there.....not ready. I think you will just "know" or "feel" when your ready.

At this stage, i do not want any more kids. Before the girls, i wanted 3. But getting 2 in the first hit was huge for us and has really changed my feelings on having more. I do get very clucky and i think that mayb, just mayb, when the girls are older, ill prob hav another. To get to 3 and like you, hopefully not 2 in the one hit again!!

I think mayb, when my girls are nearly in school, ill prob think about it more. Until then though, my hands are extremely full and im really enjoying being back at work 3 days a week.

I do agree - its an age thing. My little 2yr olds going on 22 yr olds think they rule the world!!! But i agree that its a huge difference from 2 to 3. So we will see.

Thanks for all the advice ladies. :D

DH and I talked about it last night as we decided that we do want another one but have also decided to see what happens. As you may or may not have seen on another thread, I'm going to try to get into a bachelor of teaching for Primary so I think I'll hold off for a while. I may see what happens in a year or so as the course will be part time and I can go at my own pace and slow down if I get pregnant later.

I definately agree though that you only regret the ones you don't have, so the plan is there and I'm sure we won't have that regret for too long :wink:

We went on to have another baby after the twins (which are babies # 4 & #5) and now I"m pregnant again with #7. The last 3 pregnancies have been 'surprises'.


Little sister to 5 big brothers (15, 11, 5, 3, 3) and 1 big sister (18 months)

I did it, and we are all still here to tell the story! LOL The twins were 1yr 5mths when I fell pg again. Some days I was tired and found it hard dealing with the twins and our older daughter while pg but we got there in the end and bub is almost 2yo now. :)
