I'm now 23 weeks (+4) and i have gained 11 kg's already! This seems like a lot to me. Especially when i read that the babies are each going to double in size over the next 4 weeks, and also that they (and I) will put on fat from now on.

I have not been weighing myself up to now and I've just been going with the flow... eating when i'm hungry, mainly salad sandwiches I guess (as many of you know) as well as "bad" snacks IYKWIM. I just jumped on the scales just now.

What did other mums gain all up? Or for those expecting now, how much have you gained so far?

I shudder to think how much I'll gain with two! But also remember there's the extra fluid your body retains, as well as the amniotic fluid, and the placenta(s).

Hi Louise :D

I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain especially since you are having twins!!! As long as you are eating healthily most of the time and doing a bit of gentle exercise such as walking then it really doesn't matter.

And as Mel said, your body does retain lots of fluid in different areas so not every bit of weight you have gained is really "proper" weight gain IYKWIM....every woman is different too...some may have lots of fluid retention whilst others may not...and also remember that you blodd volume has increased substantially...

I say just enjoy your pregnancy- there will be heaps of opportunities to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight once your babies have arrived :D

I had gained 11kg by the time I had the girls at 33.3 weeks. I dread to think the size I would have gotten to in the remaining weeks if I had not had the girls as the third trimester is the biggest growth spurt I think.

I agree with PP, you're having twins.. that should be enough of a stress now... hehe. There are so many factors to weight when it comes to being pregnant, and a lot of these go away quite quickly after the birth. Give yourself a little bit of a break with this for now. It's the perfect time in your life to be a little bit extra weighty...

mumofmany you are a legend... I feel much better :D

"Weight gain is especially important between weeks 20 to 24 of pregnancy. If a mother of twins gains 24 pounds (10.9kg's) by the 24th week of pregnancy she reduces her chance of preterm labor. Woo hoo!!! Early weight gain is also vital for the development of the placenta which aids in the passing of nutrients to the babies.
How much weight should I gain?
Weight gain depends on a number of factors including height, body type, and pre-pregnancy weight. However, most women who are carrying twins are encouraged to gain 35 to 45 pounds."

and from the other site...

"If you are expecting twins, a net weight gain at term of about 35 - 45 pounds (16 to 20.5 kilograms) is recommended."

I feel heaps better, thank you thank you thank you! I feel like I am on track and doing ok!

So glad to be able to help.... seems like I can't do much that is useful here at home at the moment - forever losing the keys, putting the wrong lunch boxes in school bags and annoying everybody with my need to clean everything, including the skirting boards and the dark corners of their bedrooms

Sounds to me like you are well on track and looking after those babies beautifully  I can't believe you are so far into your pregnancy already. My concern with weight gain is more to do with the difference between weight gain in a single pregnancy versus a multiple one. I have only put on 10kgs with each of my singletons, but I guess their is no chance of that this times YIKES

I gained 24 kgs by the time the girls arrived at 37 wks.

I was full of fluid also which added to the weight gain. My hands, feet, face, were all so puffy. My fluid disappeared after a few days.

I think its all different for everyone and their body types. Most people commented on my size but then when i had informed them i was carrying twins, they decided that i was quite small....go figure.

Yes! I am getting that now which i think is what prompted me to get on the scales and then to start this thread... This is how it usually goes:

stranger: "So, how much longer do you have to go?"
me: about 3.5 months
stranger: "I wow, you're pretty big, i thought you must be almost due! :o "
me: yes... but I'm having twins
stranger: "OH! Well you're not very big then! you're tiny!"

Whot tha!

I can relate to this too I had a woman say the same to me last week. It amazes me how freely complete strangers are to comment on your size. The first time it happened to me I wasn't quiet sure how to take it and felt like saying well I'm pregnant whats your excuse. I restrained and didn't as they didn't mean anything by it. But its difficult especially when I lost 24kg before I fell pregnant. (I had 6 knee ops and spent nearly 2 years not being able to exercise and before that was quiet slim).

I have put on about 15-16kg and I think most of it is the babies and placentas etc as according to my DH nothing else has gotten any bigger and my clothes feel the same around my legs and bum. My doctor doesn't even ask me how much weight I have put on so I guess he is not worried.

Yes there is some ways to go and as long as your meeting your nutritional requirements then I wouldn't stress about how much you haven't gained. If bubs are growing well and you're healthy, then that's all that matters.

Congratulations on your twin pregnancy, best wishes for the remainder. I hope it's smooth sailing for you.
