Great to hear some updates, can't wait to get some more!

Well, Lucas is a year old tomorrow. I can't believe it. It really has gone so fast, and it absolutely amazes me, still, every single day, that I made a little tiny person! He's growing into a pretty wonderful little boy, and he just smiles so often, and is so cheerful and happy pretty much 99% of the time. I feel really privileged to be his Mum, and to be honest, I also feel really proud to be his Mum as well, I know that I'm doing a good job at the moment, because he's healthy, and he's just so happy. :)

He had his 12 month immunisations today. He didn't even cry, although he did make a sad face when he had the third needle. Even though they don't 'have' to have a check up at 12 months, I asked the doc to weigh and measure him. He's 77cm (in the 75th percentile for height!), but weighs 9.3kg (which has him around the 19th percentile for weight). The doctor said he's healthy, and happy, and has been pretty consistently on that curve, so that we definitely shouldn't be worried!

Knowing that he's so 'tall' though explains why I have trouble with long pants for him at the moment! They're too big around the waist, but too short around the legs! So good to know it's to do with his build, as opposed to defective clothing :)

He's taken four or five steps here and there, but is generally still sticking to cruising on the furniture, and crawling nearly everywhere else in the gaps inbetween! Not much in the way of talking, Muma and Dada seem to be the extent of his 'words' but he's a very good communicator despite that. Recently he's become obsessed with playing peek-a-boo, or as he knows it the "Where's Lucas?" game :)

As for the pregnancy, seems to be progressing well so far. We were told it's no longer twins (although DP believes there's one hiding in there somewhere), but I'm still happy to have one healthy little bub growing away.

Hopefully everyone and their bubs are doing well! I'll put up some pictures after Lucas' birthday :) We're having a big party on Sunday, so that should be fun :)

Hi All,

I hope I have posted in the correct section.

I was thinking that if I new I was going to have a prem baby or was expecting this to occur I would probably find such a forum to read up on. So.... I wanted other parents to be aware that my experience was a positive one re: bub coming early (the birth wasn’t positive but bubs health was).

Jake was born unexpectedly at 36 weeks by emergency C section due to pregnancy complications. I was told that he would likely need to be taken away at birth for extra care due to being born early. We delivered at our local public hospital - it doesn’t have 'specialist care' as such. If this is needed you are transferred to Perth.

We'll he was born big at 7 pound 6 ounces (neither I nor the doctors where quite expecting this birth weight.) He didn’t need any extra care and ended up back in my room with me and hubby just a few hours after being born. Would have been back with us earlier if I had recovered better from surgery.

He hasn’t had any developmental delays and in actual fact I was told by the health nurse that I shouldn’t adjust his age as to developmental milestones. Not sure if 4 weeks early is not early enough for this or this was just in regards to Jake. For example he was walking (just) by his 1st bday.

Moral of my storey is hopefully a positive one - I was all geared up for health issues / delays in development ect but nadda. Only problem we had was trouble breast feeding, ended up staying in hospital 6 nights as he wasn’t putting on weight because he wasn’t feeding probably (this wasn’t his fault though - the nurses not helping enough in this area)

Jake just got weighed and height measured and he is in the 90th percentile for his height (above average) and weighs just less than 14 kg.

I don’t mean to take aware from the realistic concerns and issues prem babies face but wanted to highlight it may not always be as bad as you may expect.

Cheers
Chany

Thanks for sharing your story Chany.

Your little man sounds so well! He was certainly born a good size for his gestation and what a relief that he has no health issues.

He sounds as though he is growing nicely now too. Cole is around the 10kg mark and in the 10th percentile for height for his age so he's till pretty small!!

It's good to hear a positive story :D

Hi Ladies. I'm new here.
But I thought I might share my story.

I'm not sure if there are any other Type 1 Diabetic mums on here, but being diabetic I knew I would be induced early as diabetic babies are usually bigger than regular babies.
So as soon as I found out I was pregnant I tried very hard to keep my health on track, which I did the best I have ever been and I was measuring perfect the whole way.

At 31 weeks I was put on twice weekly feotal monitoring just to check bubby was okay which she was. When I went for my check up at 35 weeks (monday) my blood pressure was SKY HIGH so I didn't even get to go home, but was admitted straight away.

During the next week I had probably hundreds of pills to bring my blood pressure down but nothing was working. On the Wednesday night I was given an endone for something (which I forget) but then bubs stopped moving so they said I was going to have her that night (this was about midnight) However 20 mins later they changed their mind)

By Friday I was 36 weeks and my blood sugar levels were dropping unexpectedly and my blood pressure was still for too high. On the Saturday I was put on the drip to induce, however after 4 hours I had no contractions and I hadn't dilated at all so off for a ceasar I went. She was born at 36 weeks and she was 8 pounds 5 ounces.

Chloe went straight to the nursery with low blood sugar levels after I got a 1 minute hold. It was so sad that I didn't get to see her at all until the next day because I couldn't get out of bed and she couldn't come to me.

After 3 days her sugar levels had levelled out but she kept shaking uncontrollably and was taken back to the nursery after only 1 night with me.
Chloe stayed in the hospital until the Sunday morning whilst I went home on the Friday.
It was very sad going home with out her, I can't imagine what its like having to leave your bubs there for weeks or months.

So that's my story. Sorry it's so long.
I worry the next pregnancy will end the same way, but it seems no matter how hard I try, my body makes all the decisions for me.

Hi Mamas of premmies!
I can not believe it's been about 18 months since anyone posted in here! I guess now that our prems are older they have 'caught up' to their term counterparts.

I know there are few forum babies born early recently so thought I would revive this old thread in case any of you wish to post in here :)

Hope everyone is doing well!

Thanks Tara, I'll start off since I'm online. Audrey was only just premature at 36 weeks.

She hasn't had any problems apart from weight gain and growing but she is finally at the point where you can tell she is getting bigger. She is still mostly in 0-3 month clothes but starting to go into some 3-6 month old clothes at almost 9 months old now.
