Hi Ladies,
Once again we are calling on you for some tips. We want to know (for the next issue of Wondertime) what you and your family do around the home, or in daily life, to encourage green living. ie. recycle your wrapping paper, use bath water to water the plants etc. We're sure you have loads of ideas to share so please post them below.

*recycle everything we can
*use cloth nappies
*avoid heating/cooling the house using electricity unless absolutely necessary
*shower DS with us
*have a garden that only needs to rely on rain
*recycle wrapping paper/gift bags...they "live again" is our motto
*always take reusable bags shopping - for both groceries and other shopping
*donate unwanted clothes to Vinnies, instead of throwing out
*wash when we have a full load
*don't use a drier
*buy products with minimal packaging
*only use reusable drink bottles
*don't buy bottles water
*'if it's yellow, we let it mellow'
*walk to shops where possible

Jayde love helping our 'wormy house' (compost heap) by putting food scraps on it. Also I found I was always having heaps of the plastic fruit n veg bags around so got these great reusable ones called fregie bags they are like netted material and makes the fruit look more appetising to the kids too  Jaydes works of art now become wrapping paper and cards rather than have a cupboard full of paintings.

reuse reuse reuse!!!

We try to buy and use as much reusable items as possible....nappies, shopping bags, storage containers, packaging (reused for craft), paintings/drawings from school (reused as gift wrap)...

We try to buy locally sourced groceries and those that are from sustainable sources. We have reduced our meat intake and eat alot of vegetarian meals.

We give alot of thought to what comes into our house, and how it will leave our house...the choices we make, and things we do today will effect our families tomorrow, so that is the thinking behind our actions and choices....

We are starting to think bigger too - we are having solar electricity panels installed this month :D That is so exciting!!
We also try to collect some of our grey water/cooking water and use that on our gardens...
And we would really love to have our own vegie patch - that's next

When it rains we put out the buckets and then use the water to water the pot plants that don't get a soaking from the rain.

We recycle all that we can and put all food scraps into the compost heap which we then use on the garden.

Instead of using the air con all the time, we use ceiling fans and open windows once a cool breeze comes through.

We turn off lights when not in the room, and turn off most appliances from the powerpoint instead of leaving things like the tv on standby.

All water thats from the washing machine, sinks, shower and baths go into a big drum and gets used to water the gardens and veggie patch....

All food scraps and paper go in the compost patch.

No aircons get used in summer just fans.

No dryer

Speedy wash on the washing machine = less water and energy used

Hand wash up once a day and no rinsing

95% of our fruit and veggies come from within 20kms of our house

I recycle best when I have two inside bins. One for the regular rubbish and waste and the other for the recycling. That stopped me getting lazy and just putting it all in the rubbish.

our little afternoon ritual with DD is to go around the hose collecting all of the papers, cardboards etc and we take them all out to the recyle bin together. We also tend to by alot of our food in bulk then seperate into tupperwear or nude food containers to reduce the amont of packaging we use.

I brought a bike with a child seat on the back so we ride most places instead of driving. We also compost, recycle, have a veggie garden, turn all appliances off at the power point and aviod using the heater and airconditioner whenever possible. I only wash clothes in cold water with no phosphate, grey water safe washing liquid. And we eat very little meat and try to get organic locally produced meat when we do.

We go green where ever possible.
- Changed all cleaning products to brands such as eco brand, earth, use vinegar in the dishwasher once a week to clean it etc
- Use a sabco broom/mop which only require small amount of water to wash floors, try not to use vaccuum
- Clean oven with bi carb soda works a treat
don't have a dryer, walk around to laundry mat if absolutely necessary
- Go to the markets for out fruit & veg, and use trolley not plastic bags
Recycle everything we can
= Cook with fresh food majority of the time
- I use little reusable containers to pack lunches and snacks, no glad wrap or bought plastic bags etc Buy one big tub of yoghurt and put portions in the reusable containers,
- My 2 year old puts majority of recycling in bin, he has a stool and his own box that he takes out to the bin, teaches them early
- Turn off our appliances at the wall
- Walk whereever possible, use the pram or a baby carrier (good fitness also)
- Have a water tank
- Both children bath together
- Planted natives that require very little water, have a herb garden
- My 2 year old's art work is turned into wrapping paper
- Store pens, playdough, craft materials in used icecream containers and a used cardborad box to store them in. My two year old decorates them with cut outs from the catalogues that come in the mail, paints etc.
- When we make fresh juices, we make muffins with the pulp
