Birth of Daisy Faith, 16-06-2011

Sorry it’s a bit of a novel!

I had been having heaps of Braxton hicks and cramping for a few weeks now, and was getting so impatient!

I woke up the morning of my due date and hubby asked if he should go to work that day. I felt a bit ‘funny’ and had a bit of cramping so told him nah, stay home. So we got up, I had a shower, washed my hair, put makeup on and got dressed for the day.

The cramping was getting a little worse by 7 am and I started thinking that maybe it was it, so I rang my birth team (my mum, MIL, sister, and SIL x 2) and they all came over to have breakfast and hang out with me. The contractions at that stage weren’t painful and I was still chatting through them, playing with Hamish, and got him dressed and such. About 8 am I noticed that I was having to stop and breathe through them and because I had a quick labour with Hamish we decided to head to hospital, about 8.30. The hospital is about 10 mins from our house.

DH was in such a panic on the way to hospital he wasn’t paying attention to the road and didn’t see a huge big road closure sign in the middle of the road, and crashed straight through it whilst I was in the middle of a contraction. Wasn’t too impressed!!! LOL

So we get to hospital at 8.40 or so after checking the damage on our poor car (bumper half hanging off!) and because I wasn’t making a scene and my contractions were totally manageable and only lasting for about 45 seconds each they left me standing in reception for half an hour! They also weren’t impressed that I had brought an entourage with me and I was getting some dirty looks lol. Anyway they finally checked me out about 9.15 and I was 6 cms, the midwife asked if she could break my waters, I said no, she said “oops” and discovered meconium in my waters..

So they finally take me to a delivery suite at 9.30, make me get on the bed and strap me to a ctg machine which was SO uncomfortable, I kept asking if I could get up and they kept saying no. I felt myself starting to shake and shiver and knew I was going through transition, I told the midwives and they ignored me. I then said I was feeling heaps of pressure, they ignored me. My body started to push on its own, I told them and they ignored me. Then at about 9.50 am I yelled out “BABY IS CROWNING!!” which got them running over and gloving up lol, 10 minutes later and 2 pushes she was out!! I didn’t tear at all which im happy about, but my goodness I would have been so much more comfortable being upright to push, being on my back totally sucked!!! My tailbone was KILLING ME!

So Daisy weighed in at 10 pound 1 ounce, and she was born at 1 minute past 10, on her due date! Pretty awesome, and my labour and birth was quick but not intense at all, I had no need for any pain relief, the only bit where I had to yell out was the birth of her head! And it was so quick that I didn’t have time to break out in a sweat- so my hair was all nice and makeup still on for the after delivery photos haha.

And she is just lovely, so chunky and cuddly, and feeds and sleeps like a champion! Wub

Congratulations on a wonderful birth! I'm sorry, but I had to laugh out loud when I read about DH crashing the car! What was he thinking? You'll get some good mileage out of that one LOL

Spontaneous labor in a normal woman is an event marked by a number of processes so complicated and so perfectly attuned to each other that any interference will only detract from the optimal character. The only thing required from the bystanders is that they show respect for this awe-inspiring process by complying with the first rule of medicine - nil nocere (do no harm)

Nicola sounds like you had a wonderful birth (except for the staff!) and it's good to hear positive stories as sometimes I think people enjoy sharing their horror stories more.

Congrats on a beautiful little girl and I love the name. Wub
