The birth of Tyson William Cornish

Just after midnight on Sunday the 26th June, I woke to the feeling of being wet, after a few visits to the toilet I realized it was my waters and not my bladder!!
So I called the hospital to let them know, as baby was sitting high and there was a risk of the cord pro lapsing, they said to come in and they will check me out, called up the in laws to come over to watch the kids and once they arrived we where off, was having some mild contractions but nothing huge.

After 4 hours nothing was happening so we decided to come home and just see how we went, if nothing had happened by Monday morning we where going to look at getting induced. So we just spent the day getting a few things done and having a rest as we where both tired from the night before, the kids where picked up at 4pm to go to their nanny and poppa’s for the night. I went for a little walk to see if I could get anything going again, as I had no pains at all that day, and then had a lie down. We had dinner and watched some TV, by about 8pm we where buggered so we went to bed for the night.

At about 10pm I woke up with some pains, so got up and just walked around a bit to see how they went, by 11pm they where getting worse and coming about 6mins apart, but still not to painful. I spoke to mum to let her know that things should be happening soon. Although coming often they where still all over the place, so I tried to lie down for awhile, but was up and down for the next couple of hours. At about 2am I called the hospital and they just said to take some panadol and use a heat pack and to call back when they where exactly 5 minutes apart.

So back to bed I went, was doing ok there for awhile, then at about 3am I had the worst contraction yet, got through that one then 5 minutes later got another, then another whopper 5 minutes later, so I woke David up and told him I cant handle them anymore and we have to go, called the hospital and told them the same thing, so off we went in a bit of a hurry this time. The hospital was only at most 10 minutes away and I had 2 contractions in the car, another when I got out of the car and another when we got to maternity. They where coming at about 4 minutes apart by now.

Once in birth suite (with the same midwife as the previous night) I was hooked up to the ctg, was very painful lying down having major contractions. Midwife asked if they where worse then the night before….yes they definitely where!! Thankfully she only needed a 10 minute trace, then I was off the bed and in the shower sucking down the gas, sat on the birth ball prepared to just sit there and bounce for a bit and use the gas as needed, after about 10 minutes they where coming strong and I couldn’t sit there anymore, so I stood in the shower and just breathed with the gas for awhile. Midwife came and went and when she came back the contractions where on top of each other and I was getting the urge to push….she managed to get me to the bed somehow to examine me and I was 8 cm dilated, which for a 3rd baby is nothing apparently and I would dilate to 10 cm in no time, I wasn’t at all comfortable on the bed so the midwife suggested going back to standing in the shower as it was working well for me.

Once back in the shower the baby was coming, the midwife prepared to deliver the baby in the shower, got David multi tasking and called the other midwife in to assist.
After a couple of pushes our baby’s head was out (much to my relief) and thanks to the midwife assisting It wasn’t to painful and with the next push at 5:17am on the 27th of June after only just over 2 hours of active labor his body slipped out into the midwifes arms and down onto the towels on the floor, the cord was wrapped around his neck and he wasn’t breathing, it was a bit of an anxious few seconds, but the midwife cut his cord quickly and got him onto the trolley and gave him some oxygen and within a few seconds he let out an almighty cry, Thankfully he was fine after that and had no other dramas, but it was a bit scary.

While he was being sorted I was helped over onto the bed lied down and then was handed my beautiful baby boy. He was so content and alert, taking everything in and wondering what all the fuss was about. Once my placenta was delivered and the midwife was happy that I didn’t need any stitches we where left for awhile to do some family bonding.
When the midwife came back in it was time to do his weight and measurements. I was totally not expecting him to be that big but he came in at 4.2kg, 52cm long and with a head circumference of 37cm.
Then he was dressed and wrapped and handed over to daddy for a cuddle while I had a shower and had some breakfast. After that we where taken to the ward and left to rest and enjoy our new baby boy……Tyson William.

Congratulations on your baby boy! What a lovely birth story BigGrin

Spontaneous labor in a normal woman is an event marked by a number of processes so complicated and so perfectly attuned to each other that any interference will only detract from the optimal character. The only thing required from the bystanders is that they show respect for this awe-inspiring process by complying with the first rule of medicine - nil nocere (do no harm)
