If your baby has a dummy, how old where they when they started using one?
Wade started using a dummy last week, and it is really great! He is an enthusistic thumb sucker. So Mum said to me, 'get that kid a dummy!' I thought it would be handy for her and DH if I had to duck out for anything. And I think it is helping with his feeds. As in, he is having bigger feeds less frequently and not over filling and bringing up half his milk. None of my other kids were ever even slightly intereseted in a dummy. So it is kind of ... different.
Wade is ?14? weeks old? I would have thought that if he was going to be into dummies I would have worked it out before now. So for those of us with babies who use dummies, how old were they when you introduced one to them?

I introduced the dummy when she was about a week old and she grew out of it at 6 months. I think i was pretty lucky that she just gave it up herself

Abby has had one pretty much from birth but only has it while she is sleeping now, where Piper couldn't keep one in her mouth until she was almost 4 months old but then got veeeery attached to it. She had it all the time and we finally managed to get rid of it when she was about 2.5.

I think 2 days old? The midwifes gave it to him as he stayed on my nipples literally for a whole night sucking and they were grated up and bleeding *shudders*. Some bubs just need to suck! Jack 21.01.08 Me- 24 DH-28

DD was about 4 months old. before then she couldn't keep it in her mouth. We gave it to her cause my nipples were getting sore from her comfort sucking. She still has it now at almost 2 but only for sleep times. I'm hoping she gives it up soon.

Darcy had one from about a week old. He still has it now, but only at sleep time. He loves his dummy but only for sleeps (or if we are over at someone place in the evening and he is tired etc.) I dont mind him still having it as he doesnt have it during the day, and it is his comfort. I will def be using a dummy with the next one too. I think they are a godsend. Great for if they are sooky, tired, you are trying to extend feeds etc Me (Andrea)

We started DD on a dummy at 7 days old, used it rarely, she flat out rejected it at 15 weeks after having gastro and using it a lot. DD1 - December 2009 - breastfed for 22 months DD2 - January 2012 - straight back onto the booby feeding bandwagon

My now 2yr old hd one from day one as he was a big thumb sucker. He had it most of the day and night as he had bad reflux and it helped him. He gave it up about 3 months ago just on his own and now sees them and says "yuck".
My now 4yr old had one when he was a few days old but never really had it except at night - he also gave it up on his own around 6 months old.

I forgot to add I was not a fan of them but with the youngest it was a big help.

Some bubs just need to suck! Cooper was like this as well, a very 'sucky' baby. And try as I might he just would. not. take it. It was a nightmare!! Out of sheer desperation I even tried to introduce one at 8 months!! Hudson has a dummy. We introduced it at the same time as out other boys which was around 2 days old. He wouldn't really suck on it at first but as he grew bigger & stronger he took it properly (probably around 10ish weeks). The only reason we persevered was because we were heading over East when he was 3 months and we though the sucking might help on the plane. Evelyn got one at about 2 days old from the midwives too. It was an absolute blessing because she had reflux and vomited so much, and the dummy helped to keep some of it down. She was 3yo when she finished with it.

I gave Tilly a dummy around day 2 or 3 as well. It took awhile to convince her that she liked it though lol. Then she gave it up herself at the same time she started eating solids, which was 11 months. But she gave it up for her thumb, which she uses to go to sleep - still!! Im wondering whether i should give her a dummy now to swap it for her thumb, and in 6 months i could ditch the dummy. Or santa could take it away. But 3 1/2 seems much too big for a dummy..

Both of mine had dummies from around 5-6 weeks, they both had terrible reflux so they really helped with feeds and settling. We tried to keep the use of a dummy to a minimum to make it easier (hopefully) when we took them. Both boys only had them for sleeps unless they were really unsettled at other times. DS1 gave up his dummy at 15 months, DS2 at 14 months. They gave them up really easily, we only had a few tears for the first night and they were over them by the third night.

Interesting ....
It sounds like a lot of people have used dummies to help with reflux. I guess that is sort of what we are doing too. I feel like I'm no longer constantly covered in regurgetated breastmilk all the time.

Hamish took his from birth, he was a really lazy sucker and the midwives thought it would help with his feeding, which it did. I got so sick of constantly putting it back in his mouth in the middle of the night that I was a great big meanie and took it off him cold turkey at 6 months! Daisy is a super sucker and has only just started to take one now! It's a life saver- DH works away and it means I can pop it in her mouth during that horrible witching hour when I'm trying to comfort a sooky bub, and feed hamish, bath him, read him a story and put him to bed! me (nicola) 23 DH (tom) 24 DS (hamish) 30-01-2010 DD (daisy) 16-06-2011

Lucas had one in the NICU. Couldn't be held, couldn't suck - so they gave him one and he didn't look back (and still hasn't). Gracie briefly had one in the hospital, and would occasionally take one at home, but sadly was not into them at all. Now she'll occasionally steal one from Lucas, but she more chews on it than sucks I'd definitely go one early on with the next child if they're keen on it!
