Pain!

My 2nd son is nearly 11 months old. He now has 9 teeth and since the 9th (middle back) has come in it has become extremely painful to feed. It has gotten worse over the past 3 days and I now have 2 small red (teeth) marks close to where the nipple meets the areola.

I have tried changing positions (cradle, football hold, laying down) and it's still the same level of pain however he feeds. I've tried applying lanolin after every feed. I've also tried adjusting his latch but I'm not sure what the problem could be (he seems to be latched the same?)

He's feeding about 3 hourly during the day and night.

I never experienced this with my first child, which I bf well after his first birthday.

I'm worried the pain is going to become too much and I'm going to have to stop bf. (Which also really isn't an easy option as we'd have to get a prescription for a special formula, as my son has a dairy intollerance and also suspected soy intollerance).

What options do I have? Pump and feed the milk to him in a cup? He doesn't take a bottle well and I suspect he'd be really upset if he couldn't have my boobs! Should I try a nipple shield? Where would I even get one?

Ohhh hun that can't be fun! I can't really offer and advise with the latching etc... But you can get nipple shields at the chemist usually Smile

You're a very brave woman - when DD cut her first 2 teeth, she used my nipples as teething rings, yanked and drew blood so me being a newbie and a chicken, put her straight on the bottle. I hope you're able to find something that works and is less painful for you and when you do, you share with us so that I can be a little better prepared this time around :D

Ouch!! Sad

I wonder if it would be worth seeing a lactation consultant to see if they have any ideas. I visited one through our local Child Health Centre in the initial stages with Isabelle and she watched us feed and she was just so knowledgeable and helpful - she was a lifesaver!

Weird that it has suddently changed at this stage - I can't think of anything else to suggest - it sounds like you have tried everything...

Hope you can find some solutions.

How about the ABA (Breastfeeding Association)? They might have some help - they helped me incredibly with DD.

I would try the ABA they are fantastic with problems. They have helped me a few times. I hope you get it sorted soon. Maybe it's just a stage you lo is going through. Let's hope
