Hi ladies.

I am breastfeeding my almost 5 month old and today have come down with what looks like mastitis. I have all the symptoms, apart from the redness, fever, pain and aches and pains. It feels like someone has hit my boob with a cricket bat :(
I have been to the doctors and got antibiotics but has anyone got other suggestions to help me clear this up ASAP? my DH is away working and I can't afford for it to get any worse!

I had mastitis 3 times and it is awful, so i sympathise...

The other girls have given you great tips ^^^

Also you could try having a look at the ABA website and see what they suggest - I ahve always found their website really helpful for hints. And if it doesn't seem to be settling you could always give the ABA hotline a call to see if they have any other ideas.

Hope it clears up quickly for you!

Hope the drugs have kicked in now and you are feeling a bit better. My flu symptoms and fever cleared up quickly but it took a few more days for the pain to subside Smile

the AB's are the quickest things to get the symptoms to go away as well as some panadol if you can take it. i got my first ever bout of mastitis and i got everything except the red patch, which didnt come up til the next day when i went to the doctor. i got the fever, aches, lethargy, you know where you are so hot and cold you feel like death and like you cant stand up your head is so heavy? that was me. it came on within 15 mins was so quick wenty from feeling fine to sick as a dog. just happened i had a community nurse visiting the next day and she told me, with mastitis, when you only have the red patch you can manage with getting bubs to feed with their chin on the red patch, cold compress (or warm, whatever floats your boat) and massage,. but ocne you get the fever you need to get AB's stat, as thats pretty much the worst part of it and means the infection is at its worst, like you can fight it off before you get the fever but once you have the fever you will need some extra help to fight it off iygwim. cant believe how quickly they worked were a godsend!!!

Thanks girls, my fever and hot/colds have gone away now, but my breast is still incredibly sore and red, and we're still working to clear the lump. I know what you mean about how quickly it comes on Yolanda, I was feeling fine, noticed a slight soreness in my breast, gave DD a feed and by the end of the feed I was shivering and covered in goosebumps, yet when I checked my temp I had a fever. 5 hours later and half my boob was bright red!

yep the night i got it i checked and nothing, but when i went to my gp the next day he asked and i lifted up my shirt and there was a red patch on the side where i had a blistered nipple. so doesnt always start with a red patch or lump but once the fever has hit you know your at the worst of it, and it sucks!

I must have been so lucky, when DD was a newborn I got a terrible fever and felt like absolute crap. I didn't do anything about it and then I got a red patch on my boob. Still didn't give mastitis a thought (Blushing ) Luckily by the next day I was pretty much over it and when I realized it could have gotten a lot worse!
