Birth story of Robert Jack, born 4 weeks early... I apologise in advance for it being a bit scattered/vagueAll through my pregnancy my baby was breech, and I was told that I may have to have a c-section around the new year if it didn't turn. I was very upset at the possibility of not being able to give birth naturally, but reminded myself that as long as my baby arrived safely, then the way it came didn't really matter...
At 3:20am on the 16th December, I woke up needing to pee. I got halfway to the toilet when my waters broke, though I thought I had wet myself. When it didn't stop, I knew it was my waters and calmly woke up my DH. We rang the hospital and was told to come in. Unfortunately, my hospital bag wasn't packed as I had planned on doing it the next day, so we scrounged around and grabbed some supplies before heading into the hospital.
By the time we were ready to go to the hospital, I was having contractions every 3-4 minutes. When we got to the hospital, I was hooked up to monitors and my Dr did an ultrasound to check if the baby was still breech, which it was. They quickly got organised for me to have an emergency c-section and it dawned on me that it wouldn't be very long at all until I got to meet my baby!
I was taken down to theatre where I was given an epidural and was prepped for surgery. DH came in and sat near my head - we were both a bundle of nerves and couldn't wait for our baby to be born. It didn't take long before they lowered the screen and showed us that we had a baby boy! He was taken away to be checked out and it felt like an eternity before our baby boy made his first scream - it was the best sound in the world! We were both crying with absolute joy and relief! Our baby boy was put on my chest and we knew the name we had picked suited him so very well, so he was named Robert 'Bobby' Jack. He was soo alert and bright eyed.
It wasn't until a little bit later that we found out he was very small, only weighing 2.21kgs. It turned out that the placenta was small which may have attributed to Bobby coming early. Luckily, he didn't need to go to the special care nursery, he only needed a heater to keep him warm until he could regulate his own temperature. He has been feeding like a champ from the very beginning and is now steadily putting on weight
I am very happy with my birthing experience - after staring labour at 3:20am, Bobby was born less than 3 hours later at 6:14am on 16/12/2011.
Thank you for reading my story
