We are having a new washing machine and couch delivered tomorrow and the thought just crossed my mind, how do we get rid of the old ones? They are definitely not good enough to sell and we don't have a ute or trailer and if we did I still wouldn't know where to take them so how to I get rid of them? Is there a service or something that does it or something like that?

Are they good enough to give away to charity? If so you can call St Vinnies / Salvos and they usually will come and pick up. They do need to be in working condition though...

I left a heap of stuff out for Good Sammy's once (I was at uni when they came to pick it up) and they were very selective about what they took! So I'd explain to them exactly what you have and see if they will actually take it.

We ended up having to do a dump run, with furniture that was perfectly OK, just didn't fit in our new house.

who are you getting the new stuff from...?
I am not sure about Brisbane, but here in Townsville most places take the old stuff for you, can you ring the company who are delivering your stuff and ask them...?

If the old stuff is pretty much written off we usually just store it until the next bulk collection and then leave it out. We have a big shed out the back though so we can store stuff like that without it being too much of a hassle.

It's Marrickville council trying to be green and recycling, but they have been doing it a while now, so it may have spread. I think we get 2 white good collections a year, 3 general waste and one furniture.

Most councils will do a free junk/rubbish pick up (you get 6 a year in NSW). If you pay rent you landlord pays for the free service it their rates so ring your landlord and council and see what you can do. We have been doing a lot of cleaning up lately and have been having one every couple of months.

Metal recyclers will pick up anything with metal in it. They once picked up one of my inner spring mattresses. Maybe your lounge has some metal in it somewhere. They will certainly take your washing machine.
