Just doing a quick questionaire about sterilising.
I sterilise all DS2 bottles but only occasionally the breast pump. MW at hospital told me i only had to sterilise if the bottles were going to be used for storing milk. I do formula and EBM and we are on tank water so who knows what is in it Tongue
Kinda getting sick of doing it!!!!

So....
1. Did you sterilise at all?
2. formula or EBM or both?
3. How long did you sterilise for?
4. Tank or town water??

I don't sterilize at all but the bottles get washed in the dishwasher. The pump just gets hand washed. At the moment the bottles are only used for EBM. We're on town water.

I sterilized the whole time Tilly was on bottles.
She was on formula. For the first month she was breast or EBM, and i sterilized everything, pump and bottles.
We do live in town.
Until Tilly was around 1, i only gave her cooled boiled water and made all of her bottles/food with boiled water.

Tilly was a sick baby, and I'm not convinced that the sterilizing made a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me the sterilizing affected her immune system. I did it because that's what the health nurse told me to do!
My sister isn't a religious sterilizer, and both of her boys have been very healthy. She could probably count their illness' on her fingers.

I sterilised every single bottle after use. My DD was breast feed for her first 10 weeks and a few times i would express into a bottle for her. Whether formula or EBM i sterilised her bottles. She is now 11months and no longer on formula so i have stopped sterilising and she now drinks plan old tap water. When i first changed her to cows milk i was still sterilising and giving her cooled boiled water but then i thought, she doesn't really need the protection anymore. With DD#1 & 2 I have sterilised until they were 1. They were both put on cows milk at 1. I swapped DD#3 to cows milk when she was 10.5 months with no issues. Oh and we are on town water

Hope this helps

i think i sterilised everything every time with DD til 6 months
DS i probablydid it to 4 months and only did the pump every second wash.
I was on town water with both of them. I think i only boiled water til 6 months too. I think once they put everything in their mouth it is pointless

I was just wondering if Tank water makes a difference. I only drink boiled water but DH and the kids occassionally drink straight from the tap. They dont get sick tho.
But given DS2 hasnt been immunised i will continue to boil his water.

Mostly just want to know how long i should sterilise for with the tank water. I only rinse in cold tap water so the pump would have "germs" on it.

Its all very confussing!

with bella, who was mainly ff with a bit of ebm, we sterilised every bottle every time

with liam, we never sterilised any of his bottles and he was the same ff and ebm

obviously we are on town water, being in suburbia, and neither of them are really sick, like bella not until she was 17mths was her first illness, so there is no convincing case either way. what ever makes you feel better is the option to go with. we just washed the bottles in hot as you can handle water with dishwashing liquid and then rinsed in hot water and air dried.

I only use EBM occasionally but when I do I always sterilize pump and bottle after use, I have an avent microwave sterilizer. We're on town water but I use a filter tap or boil water as our water isn't the best :)
As I only use the pump/bottles every few weeks I plan to sterilize until DD is fully weaned and drinking out of cups

We sterilised every bottle (EBM for a few weeks then formula) up until Baylee was about 9 or 10 months old, and the steamer broke and we didn't do any more after that, with no problems. If we use formula with the next one I'd be inclined to sterilise again but maybe see how we go after 6 the first 6 months?
