Hey Ladies,

This is my first bub and wondering if you can help me decide if buying a bassinet to have in our room for the first few months is neccessary?

We were planning on putting bub straight into a cot in their own room straight away as my SIL did this and it worked well for them, but I am having a lot of people saying that after having bub sleeping in a bassinet next to you in hospital and because they are so tiny that I am going to want to put it in a bassinet and have it in our room.

Please help? We are on a budget and can only afford to buy what we really need. If a bassinet is a very good option we will get one, but just want some advise from you all.

Thanks heaps!!

You don't have to buy new.
I bought DS2's bassinet off someone local on Ebay. I paid $60 for it 'as new'... then later sold it for $65!! Smile

I bought my 2 month olds bassinet for $80 from a Facebook page which is also 'as new'... these ones are $300 brand new. No doubt I will sell this for exactly what I paid for it. (If not more!! Blushing)

I find it wonderful during the day. I can wheel bub around the house and have him in which ever room I am in e.g the living room during the day in the air con while I am doing house work, in the kitchen/dining in the afternoon while I am preparing dinner etc.

At night our babies have always slept in our bed. I don't even have a cot now. We did have one for DS1... when baby shopping for him (being our first) we just assumed we would put our baby in it. When we brought bub home though DH and I both looked at the cot, then our baby and thought NO WAY!!! It was used for nappy and blanket storage until it was packed up and sold some time later.

The cot was our biggest waste of money baby purchase of all time. Everyone is different though and really you are not going to know how you are going to feel until baby arrives.

I didnt plan on using a basinett either, but i saw one on sale just before i was due and thought i would buy it "just in case" lol

Once i actually had DD I was crazy if i thought she was going to go straight to the cot!! hahaha

There was no way i wanted to be walking around the house during the night having to do night feeds lol. The basinett rocked! I had it pushed up against the bed and as soon as she stired i would lift her in to my bed and feed her. I kept her in the basinett untill she started sleeping through.

The cheapest option would be to have bub sleep in bed with you. If you're not comfortable doing that, the second cheapest option would be to buy a port-a-cot. The port-a-cot that I had came with a part that hooked on to the sides to make it into a shallower bassinette style sleeping space so I didn't have to bend down to get bub out of the bottom all the time. Plus with a port-a-cot, you can take it with you if you'll be at someone else's place during sleep time, if you go on holidays, etc. And you can keep using it for that purpose until your bub is 2 or 3 years old.

This is the type of port-a-cot I'm talking about. It's not the same brand as the one I had, but that red layer is like an extra thing that you put in before your bub can pull themself up to standing. It makes things easier on your back!

I got my bassinette for free, my cousin handed it down to me after only being used a little bit.

DD has Laryngomalacia and was a very noisy breather when she was a newborn so she spent a whole of ONE NIGHT in our bedroom! She was then put in her own room but still in her bassinette. Babies are so tiny they just look so lost inside a big cot!

You can wheel baby around the house and they can sleep in whichever room you want them to. I used to put the bassinette just outside the bathroom when I had a shower

IMO they are not a necessity because if I hadn't have gotten mine from my cousin then we would have not bought one. We were on a tight budget with our first as well. But they are truly worth thinking seriously about. They are very handy.

Both of ours went straight into cots in their own rooms. We made the cot up at the end of the bed so they couldn't slide down under the blankets. We have an angel care monitor so heard everything. I tried those silly things that are suppose th hold them straight but didn't need it as the oldest never moved and the youngest would screa until we took it away.

We didn't buy a bassinet as we too were on a budget, we went straight to cot. DS spent all of two hours in it my first night home before be ended up in our bed. I tried to put him in it over and over as that's where he was 'supposed' to sleep, but I was so tired and I couldn't keep getting up to feed him, so he became a co sleeper. Though it's not for everyone. You need to go with what you feel comfortable with - Even though that may change once bub arrives, as what worked for your SIL may not work for you and your baby.

I haven't bought one but I am buying the bassinet attachment for my pram and I also have bought a portacot with the bassinet attachment on the top of it so I figured I can use those until I am comfortable with having baby sleep in their own room and then trekking throughout the house at night for feeds.

This is the portacot I bought from Target:

We used a bassinet in our room till five months, then we moved DS for day naps to cot and about two weeks later moved him across totally. If on a budget its not a must have but for us we loved having him in our room and made the night feeds so much easier. Would use again if we have a second.

Keep an open mind....it all depends on the baby! My two girls have been in the big cot in their own room from day one, but they have both been great sleepers who dropped night feeds very early. If I was getting up multiple times a night to feed I'd probably prefer them next to me in a bassinet.
You can hire bassinets from a few places, google for ones in your area.

DD2 - January 2012 - straight back onto the booby feeding bandwagon

Just an idea, but would the cot fit in your room? That way you could have bubs near you but not have to pay for two things.

MIL bought us a bassinett and at the time I thought it was the biggest waste, but DD used it for ages and then we put her in her cot in our room until she was about 13 months old Wub Co sleeping or sharing a room obviously doesnt work for everyone, but personally I found the night feeds easier with DD nice and close to us, and I think we all slept better because of it.

We put DD straight into a cot in her own room. The first night home from hospital she was up every hour but after that she was fine sleeping in her cot. We can hear every little noise she makes from our room, and we have a video baby monitor that we can switch on if we want to check on her from bed too (used that a lot in the early days). I'm not a fan of feeding in bed, I'm much more comfy in the lounge room and have done that since the start so moving around hasn't bothered me. DD has only spent a few nights in our room since hospital, and each night has been terrible, she wants to feed heaps, as if she can smell my milk.
All that being said I definately considered a bassinet, and it would be handy to be able to move around the house occasionally.
