I was 38 weeks and 1 day. I woke up feeling fine, dropped the kids at school and went to my checkup with the Dr. He was running late so did a quick check of everything and advised me head was down but not engaged and because everything was fine he didn't need to see me again for two weeks. I left the appointment feeling good that me and baby were healthy but also a little disappointed that he thought labour was a while off yet. I also learned I had Group B strep.
I arrived home and decided the floors needed a good mop! So I spent an hour mopping and cleaning then decided I needed some ANZAC cookies so I baked a batch and sat them on the bench to cool. It was 1.20pm and I went and lay down on the couch to rest and felt a pop in my tummy! I thought to myself theres no way that was my water....I stood up and sure enough it came gushing out!
I rang hubby to come home then I called my Mum to let her know she would have to pick up the kids from school then phoned the hospital to say I would be in as I have group b strep and needed antibiotics. At this stage I was feeling no pain or contractions at all, I was terribly nervous and scared as I wasnt expecting him for another 2 weeks!
So we got to the hospital and they placed a canula in for antibiotics and hooked me up, said i was contracting but I could hardly feel it. I was told i needed to progress in 4 hrs or they would consider inducing me because of the strep. Well I tried everything! I was bouncing, squating, nipple rubbing, laughing, walking, pushing pressure points.... but I could not get those contractions! I was leaking waters everywhere! So at 7pm i was still 2cm so I was happy to get the drip and get the show on the road.
After 10 minutes on the drip the contractions arrived! I had a few warm up ones that I breathed through but they quickly turned stronger and stronger. I started contracting every 2 mins and lasting a minute. It got to a point where I wanted an epidural so the midwife said Ok see how you go with the next contraction then I will check for dialation. Then with the next contraction came the overwhelming urge to push! The mid wife waited for the next one then examined me and said i was fully dialated but still had a small lip of the cervix to go so I wasnt to push as it was causing the cervix to swell and block the exit.
I turned over onto all fours on the bed ( was hard with all my IV Lines!) And I tried to breath through the next two contractions - This was THE worse part as every part of my body wanted to push out the baby and holding back was almost impossible. I told her I couldnt hold back anymore and she agreed to listen to my body and go. With the next contraction Samuel George was born at 9.30pm on February 13th, Weighing 3.1 kgs or 6.8 pounds and 53 cms long.
Recovery has been amazing and quick, I only needed a few stitches for a small tear.
