DD has thrush and we have struggled to get rid of it since she was a week old. I had an appointment with the MCHN last week and was told she also had it on her genitals. On her advice I have been treating it with daktarin cream but don't seem to be clearing it.

I know a couple of the other January mums bubs have had thrush so I'm hoping someone might be able to recommend a remedy.

TIA

Thrush is quite stubborn. Does she have oral thrush too? I know it's hard to check but does she have any white spots on the inside of her cheeks besides milk spots? You will need to treat that with dakarin oral gel and use only a little bit cause it's quite thick and you don't want to choke also if your bf you will need to treat yourself too to stop it being transferred back and forth. How has she had it? You will need to treat her 3 times a day for about two weeks to help clear it up. My Ds had it and it went away and then came back then went away and stayed away. I was unlucky and got it in my nipple( very painful)
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after nappy changes and nappy free time is great to help dry the area out then put the cream on. Umm, there is a wash aid you can use when washing clothes called cannestan wash, it's a antibacterial wash which can also help. If your using cloth nappies make sure you line dry and not use a dryer as the heat helps thrush breed.
Hope that helps

DS had oral, intestinal and anal thrush at 2-3 weeks old. I had to keep up the daktozin on his bottom for 2-3 weeks and he had to take an oral syrup (can't remember the name, but it was yellow) for a minumum of 7 days.

It is always best to treat both internal and external as it is quite stubborn and one spore can start it all over again. It is different in babies as it is in us. Also bathe the nappy region at every nappy change so you aren't just wiping the spores around. With girls it is harder, but she shouldn't get it IN her vagina as it is 'fused' closed at this age. Only apply creams to the outside and only get ones designed for babies which is daktozin.

I hope that helps, the best advice I can give is keep up the treatment even if it looks like it is gone. Are your breastfeeding? If so do you have thrush on your nipples? They would need to be treated as well, but I am not sure how as I didn't have it.

Thanks ladies for your replies.

After her having it for 5 weeks now I was keen to see if I was missing anything in getting it cleared up. I have also managed to get to the chemist since I posted and was given a pharmacist only cream to help clear up the thrush in her nappy which seems to be working much better. Not sure what's it's called as it's in her room and i'm too lazy to go and look Blushing

It appears that she got the thrush from me during her birth and for 4 weeks it was only in her mouth which we have been treating with Nilstat (I think this is what you were talking about Courtney) and Daktarin gel. When I asked the pharmacist why it wasn't clearing she said that you just have to keep going with the Nilstat until the thrush is gone. We are currently on our 4th bottle.

I am BF but since the trush turned up I have been using a nipple shield after a girlfriend had thrush in her nipples and it caused her areola to peel away (for want of a better term). Ouch!!

Thanks Keryn for the tip about the washing detergent. I have been washing everything at 60 degrees but will try this also as what i'm doing isn't working Brick wall

Nipple thrush is very painful, I had it twice. Umm, one of my friends said when I had it that if I was using dummies to throw them out cause they can make it come back but I wasn't at the time so I'm not sure about that. So if your using a nipple shield it might be the same thing even if your sterilizing it. You can still bf without a shield if bub has thrush, you just put dakarin oral gel on your nipples after feeding 3 times a day and treat for the same amount of time your treating bub.
From memory it did take quite a while to kick so keep perservering it will go. Also, make sure you are changing breast pads frequently if your using them wash and line dry your bras often. And ouch for your friend :-(
Good luck

Bi carb also kills thrush so put it in her bath water.

I have found with Jimmy that he ends up with thrush when we use disposable wipes for any longer than 24 hours (at home we use cloth and water) I think the disposable wipes just don’t do as good a job as cloth and water. So I got a heap of chux cloth things and cut them up and I will use them with water now when away from home, maybe try doing something like to help clear up her bottom.
