DH doesn't want me to get the nuchal translucency scan (12 week scan) as it is going to cost us $95 and we don't have the money at the moment.

(I know people are going to think how come you are having another baby, blah blah... well we are moving house so have to book people to clean and get rid of rubbish plus the cost of moving into a new house).

His reasoning is becuase, there is no history of down syndrome and I am young. I can't shake this niggly feeling in the back of my mind I am a bit worried! Plus I haven't heard my babies heart beat as when I went for my dating scan I was only 5+2 and they didn't look. So I want to make sure that my baby is ok, plus I do want to see it.

Is there anyone out there who didn't get this scan done...?
Or what do you think...?

Wasn't even offered to me with DD3, apparently it's not routine here and they only do it if there is a reason to.

I didn't get it done in either of my pregnancies. With DD we didn't find out I was pregnant till 14 weeks so it was apparently to late to have done. DS we had our dating scan at 11 weeks and they said it was too early. The ultrasounds cost us $200+ so we decided not to get it done. Acording to the doctor we were classed as very low risk and to me it didn't matter if the baby had downs syndrome. We weren't going to abort or anything because of that.

My hospital also only do it if there is reason. If you want it then you go private. There was reason with DS3 due to my second having congenital defects so I had it and it cost me nothing.

you get a bit of it back from Medicare, think it's around half? I don't do it for the downs risk I do it mostly to see my baby. Would go every week if they let me LOL
I know a few people that haven't had it done, their only scan the whole pregnancy was the 20 week and no problems. Guess it's just the peace of mind of seeing the heart beating that we all love to see.
Can your midwife or doctor put the heart monitor on to see if you can hear it?

lots of people don't get it. It all depends on what you would do with the information, some people don't have it as they would keep a baby with disabilities. Others want to have it so they have the option to terminate the pregnancy.

I would not feel comfortable not having the scan no matter what the cost was, $95 sounds cheap, mine was more like $200!! Can you explain to your DH that it's playing on your mind and quite important to you that you get it done?

I didn't have it done with either of my two for the pure fact that we wouldn't act on it even if something came back from the scan (ie a high risk of downs).

Could you book an appt with your dr to hear the heart beat on a doppler? (I'm not sure at what gestation you can hear the heart beating on a doppler)

If it is eating at you really $95 is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

My MIL bought me a cheapy one when I was pregnant with Willow. but it broke. We went to have a look today to see if we could find another one but everywhere was out or didn't sell them :(

I might ask the doctor.

Another thing.. I haven't gotten my letter from the hospital yet...? When does that usally happen... I was sure by 12 weeks I got it with DD... (I know I am not 12 weeks yet LOL).

There is also a third reason and that is if you baby does have a birth abnormality then you can be prepared... not only emotionally but by giving birth in a hospital that has specialists and equipment ready for your baby should the need arise.

Emily firstly, I don't judge you on the money thing, I know part of your story (ttc and sudden job loss) so I know you're not one of those mums IYKWIM!

Maybe do some sums and see if you can make a budget cut somewhere so that you can do it, then maybe put it to your DH that if you end up having a DS child the cost will be much more than $95 !

I know of ppl who haven't done it and things were fine. One friend didn't do it because she knew she wouldn't abort if there were a problem, but ask yourself if you would abort if your test came back positive for DS or another disorder. If the answer is yes, then do the scan. If the answer is no, then there would be no point in doing it anyway except give you a few months to mentally prepare for a DS child.

Good luck hun xoxo

We have chosen not too have this scan, money is not the issue but we wouldn't change anything.
We will have the 20 week scan plus a few extra if anything shows up wrong, i have a genetic kidney disease and so does Jacob.
If you can find the money do it or ring them up they may let you pay it off?

We didn't have the nuchal scan, but my ob had just bought a new ultrasound machine and gave me a scan at every appointment so he could play with his machine... So I already had piece of mind!

There was never such thing when I had my first two children and had only heard about it when I was pregnant with Capri.

Not sure if it was because I was older or that everyone has one these days but my risk came back as that of a 16 year old!!!

Its all a personal choice I suppose because like said before, I only had 20 week scans with my older two and that was all!!

We did with DS but decided not to with this baby. We wanted to limit babys exposure to ultra sound..(although went out the window with my placenta previa!) and not to mention didn't have the money lying around.

I was too far along to have it done. But if I had the chance, I would have preferred to have it done (even though I was only 18) I like to be prepared Smile

Thanks Rach!!! :)

In all honestly in my head we could afford it. It is DH birthday on the 1 March and I think he wanted that money to put towards a birthday present for himself (yes he is a bit selfish!! Wub ).

I think I might have a look around I have been told by a few people that the hospital might do them free of charge (however as I am not in a high risk - I don't think they might for me) and then talk to DH again and then decide if we still want to do it. I am leaning towards no from the answers here.

That's me too. I just want to look at bub Wub

Since your not working, you might be able to get a HCC. I know the place I went to, will bulk bill for people with concession cards. Might be something to look into.

I have had it done ech time and would always have it done. I am glad we did choose to have it done with my second pregnancy as there was a major problem that was going to be devastating in the end so t lest we had the information to act upon.

As other's hve said it is a lot of money but DS costs and wful lot more in the long run. I would tell your DH that he might have to wait for a present for a little while.

OMG!

I would ruffle through some bills, look upset, then turn to DH and say "hey babe, I'm really sorry but I we can't afford to get you a birthday present this year. We just have too many other priorities. Maybe next year!"
